1970 Olds Delta 88 questions?

Question by Tim R: 1970 Olds Delta 88 questions?
Hi all. Can anyone fill me in a bit more on this car? I know it has the 350 Rocket engine. That is a 2 barrel carb, yes? Also, what about the transmission and rear end? I read somewhere thy have a dana 12 bolt rear end and a turbo 400 trans. I am sorry, I am not really that knowledgeable about cars. This is a 2 door hardtop. Are they considered good engines, etc? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks for the info so far!

I doubt anyone ever memorized the specs of an olds delta 88. I will say this though. If that car is still running with the original motor, apparently it was one helluva good motor, at least the one made that day at the factory.

Olds delta 88 rocket engine is an oxymoron. I’m pretty sure that car was a tank & it would take a real rocket motor to get any performance out of it. I learned to drive in the 70’s so I’m vaguely familiar with that era. I don’t remember anyone hopping up a Delta 88 as a hot rod. I do remember a few pintos being hopped up though. Go figure. Stupid high school kids will hop up anything.

Pontiac had a rocket 350 that was an excellent motor along with a turbo 400 transmission you had a great combo for blasting down the road. Look under the air cleaner and count the holes I am thinking a 4 barrel carb for sure. This is a high output 350 with better heads than most stock 350 and if you tune it right and run super unleaded the motor will be a whole lot of fun taking off. when you stick your foot into it. Try looking it up on wikepedia 1970 oldsmobile delta 88 I found the history of the delta 88 in wikepedia here is the link there was a short bit on the 70 but not a lot of info good luck click on the link in blue letters and scroll down.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oldsmobile_Delta_88

The Olds Rocket engine (never made a Pontiac named that) was famous for its durability and power. They came in many sizes and configurations over the years as “Rocket” was just a name that Olds attached to their engines. The 350 was a very common engine and came in 2 barrel and 4 barrel configurations. It was a high compression engine and provided good power but of course it couldn’t compete with the Rocket 455 which was also available in the Olds Delta 88. There are some companies that specialize in Oldsmobile engines of the design yours would be. Mondello is the one I am most aware of but I guess you could Google up a few more if you try. Olds made some two door 88s with buckets, consoles, floor shifts and a modified roof line that were special and pretty rare but the name doesn’t come to mind. It may have been “Royale” but I don’t think that was it. I think “Royale” was a much more common Olds badge. Aynway, whatever the heck they were called you would recognize it pretty quick. I would hang on to it for sure.

It should be a 4 bbl and yes they are good engines ….I worked in a Chevy/Olds dealership and a technician told me in the 45 years he had worked there, that they only had 1 Olds engine that had a problem…a missing Rod Bearing cap nut…..put a new nut on…no more problem.
